Matthew Owens (organ)
The Frobenius Organ of The Queen's College, Oxford

A close contemporary of Buxtehude, Johann Pachelbel was by all accounts an outstanding keyboard player himself, and his compositions provide a fascinating stylistic bridge between early-Baroque composers such as Frescobaldi and Froberger (both of whom influenced him) and the later music of Bach and his contemporaries.

Organist Matthew Owens embarks on a major exploration of the many extant organ works of Pachelbel beginning with this first volume recorded on the iconic 1965 Frobenius Organ of The Queen’s College Chapel in Oxford, considered a vital instrument in the classical organ revival in Britain. Demonstrating the huge range of his abilities as a composer, the diverse forms and styles Pachelbel used are revealed in this compelling recital.

'Matthew Owens and his producer Adam Binks have done a marvellous job in capturing the clarity of Pachelbel’s counterpoint and in reminding music lovers of the beauty and nobility of this landmark instrument. The playing is full of sensitive insights. I eagerly look forward to future instalments.'

- Gramophone

'[...] Owens hits the mark every time. In the Prelude in D minor, the music’s conventional opening gives way to echoing chords that are strikingly handled. And the beautiful set of variations in the Chorale Partita on ‘Ach, was soll ich Sünder machen’ inspire light and airy registrations on the Frobenius organ of The Queen’s College, Oxford, a significant instrument ideally suited to his music.'

Gramophone

'I enjoyed Matthew Owen’s playing tremendously, and warmly welcome this first CD. Because of the clarity of the Frobenius and the cleanness of his playing, not a note is lost. '
Early Music Review

'It’s a compliment to all concerned, not least Owens and the organ at Queen’s, that the new Resonus recording has taken me on something of a Pachelbel trip, proving that fine music can be as addictive as other substances.'
MusicWeb International

'Matthew Owens gives fine performances of this staple (but often not very well known) baroque organ repertoire. Organist and instrument are well suited to this music in the first volume of what promises to be another well executed series from Resonus.'
Lark Reviews

'The programme is well chosen, with a variety of pieces drawn from across Pachelbel’s organ works to form an effective stand-alone recital. Matthew Owens’ playing is impressively sensitive to the music and includes a welcome sense of appropriate rhythmic freedom, notably in the opening Prelude. He makes very effective use of the various colours of the organ, an essential requirement for a recording with 35 tracks. The recording quality is excellent.'
