Hafliði Hallgrímsson: Choral works
Schola Cantorum Reykjavík
Hörður Áskelsson (conductor)
Resonus Classics is delighted to present an album featuring a selection of choral music by the celebrated Icelandic composer Hafliði Hallgrímsson.
Following the critically acclaimed recording of Hallgrímsson’s carol Joseph and the Angel, which featured on Resonus’s 2012 Christmas release This Christmas Night (RES10113), this latest album is performed by Schola Cantorum Reykjavík under the direction of their conductor Hörður Áskelsson.
Made up entirely of world premiere recordings, this album features most of Hallgrímsson’s smaller-scale choral works including the three-movement work Níunda Stund originally written in 1993 and revised in 2006 together with Rúra, rúra barni (sleep, sleep now darling). This piece is one of the composer’s simplest, but most immediately affecting, pieces, and is an arrangement of a traditional lullaby from the Faroe Islands.
